Mei 99 WE 52 <br />* Respondents voted on program preferences by checking those activities which <br />should (in their opinion) be included at the center. Rankings by votes <br />were: Swimming 180, Sports 164, Computers 144, Music 138, Counseling <br />118, Dance 115, Health and Safety 112, Mentoring and Classes (tied) 92. <br />* 86% indicated a willingness to participate in the center. <br />* 150 names and addresses/phone numbers 'were derived from this survey which <br />may benefit this project in the future. <br />* 56% of the respondents were female, 50% were adults. <br />Specific comments and suggestions from the respondents appear in this document <br />following the survey totals sheet. <br />Dr. David Sullivan of Indian River Community College advised <br />that he worked with Mrs. Williams in taking the survey which <br />encompassed Community Survey Results, Focus Group Survey Results, <br />and Personal Interview Summaries. Dr. Sullivan thanked Mrs. <br />Williams for her hard work, and Chairman Adams expressed the <br />Board's thanks to Mrs. Williams and Dr. Sullivan. <br />Freddie Woolford, president of the Gifford Progressive Civic <br />League, presented a Visitation Report on the Grant Street Community <br />Center in Melbourne, Florida: <br />Construction of this multi-purpose community center on Grant Street culminates many years of effort by the <br />Melbourne City Council, City officials, the Citizens Advisory Board, the South Melbourne Police Community Relations <br />Council, the ,Melbourne Police Athletic League and community groups. <br />Following receipt of recommendations from City staff, the Citizens Advisory Board and civic associations, the City <br />Council authorized a preliminary design study in 1985 to determine space requirements and cost estimates for the <br />building. The preliminary design study considered alternate sites for the building and established design criteria. The City <br />Council then budgeted $45,000 in 1986187 fiscal year for the preparation of construction plans and specifications. Upon <br />completion of these plans by the architects, Herrera, Williams & Powell, 5651.597 was budgeted for contruction. The <br />budget included Community Development Block Grant Program funds of S162,078 and a bond issue of S489,519. G & S <br />Contractors of Brevard began construction in December 1987, and the building was completed in July 1988. <br />The building will be operated by the City's Leisure Services Department, and used for recreation and community func- <br />tions. It contains a gymnasium/auditorium, meeting rooms. reception/lobby area, shower/locker rooms, public restrooms. <br />storage and mechanical room. The addition of a full kitchen has been authorized by City Council and will be completed <br />within the next few months. The building is air-conditioned, and is designed for future expansion. Sixty-four parking <br />spaces are available and the grounds are landscaped to make it both a functional facility and an attractive asset to the <br />community. <br />MAYOR <br />Joe Mullins <br />CITY COU` -CIL MEMBERS <br />John A.
