Some people suggest attracting new industries, such as the tech industry or space <br />travel program, to replace the lost agriculture industry. In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic that resulted in a shift to <br />increased remote workers, it is suggested the County should invest in its digital infrastructure, create coworking spaces, <br />and advertise its high quality of life to position Indian River County as an attractive destination for remote workers. Finally, <br />there are concerns about traffic congestion in residential areas and the need for more medical office space in Sebastian. <br />Responses emphasized redevelopment over new development. <br />The community generally envisions new or redeveloped economic development opportunities occurring: <br />◊ Along 14th Avenue, Route 60, 512, US 1, Highway 110, the Miracle Mile area, Aviation Boulevard, and 85th Street <br />between US 1 and 86th Avenue <br />◊ At the Indian River Mall, “Three Corners”, “Four Corners” <br />◊ Via adaptive reuse of existing buildings, especially the old power plant <br />◊ Near I-95 interchanges such as Route 60 and the future Oslo Road interchange – industrial development is the <br />preference here <br />◊ Where it will support sustainable growth and minimize environmental impact <br />◊ To attract Aldi, Costco, and Trader Joe’s <br />◊ In Fellsmere, downtown Vero, or by the airport <br />◊ By the Lagoon, similar to Bayfront Park in Miami, which features businesses, restaurants, entertainment, marina, <br />boat slips, and fishing all in one spot <br />DIA Highlights <br />The Data Inventory & Analysis for the Economic Development Element did not undergo update(s) as part of this review. <br />PAGE 76
