I <br />PROCLAMATION <br />SUPPORTING INDIAN RIVER <br />LAGOON DAYS IN INDIAN <br />RIVER COUNTY <br />WHEREAS, Indian River Lagoon Days is an environmental field <br />trip for public school children; and <br />WHEREAS, for almost two decades, children of Indian River <br />County have benefited from a program that teaches them about the <br />Indian River Lagoon, and they explore this valuable part of our <br />county; and <br />WHEREAS, the children spend a day in hands-on exploration of <br />the lagoon, traveling to the Environmental Learning Center in <br />Wabasso, where small groups of students rotate through six <br />activities, such as canoeing, netting fish, touching wildlife, <br />wading in the water, seeing animals and learning about the <br />environment; and <br />WHEREAS, this learning program prepares a generation of youths <br />who are interested in the environment; and <br />WHEREAS, Indian River Lagoon Days was begun by the Indian <br />River County School District and kept alive by hundreds of <br />community volunteers: <br />NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT PROCLAIMED BY THE BOARD OF COUNTY <br />COMMISSIONERS OF INDIAN RIVER COUNTY, FLORIDA that the Board <br />declares February 3 - 7, 1997 as <br />INDIAN RIVER LAGOON DAYS <br />and the Board salutes this important program along with the <br />volunteers and their contribution to our lifestyle. <br />The Board further urges the community to continue their <br />support of the efforts to inform our young people of the importance <br />of the Indian River Lagoon in our daily lives. <br />Adopted this 4 day of February, 1997. <br />1:z BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS <br />OF INDIAN RIVER COUNTY, FLORIDA <br />t <br />-. V <br />EGGE]RqT,,rman <br />Elliott Jones stated that thousands of school children have <br />gone through the program over the years and in a recent survey <br />about 90% of the 6th graders rated it highly. This Friday a team <br />from the State"s Department of Education is coming to consider <br />giving the program a State Environmental Education Award. <br />Commissioner Adams commented that this is a super program and <br />she would like to see it get state recognition. <br />Celeste Rineheart expressed thanks for Dr. Gayler and the <br />School System for the vision of the program and Elliott Jones for <br />the power behind the pen. <br />2� <br />BOOK pit. <br />February 4, 1997 <br />
