BOOK ' � .. <br />I I PAGE <br />'�eS6IJ rioi./ <br />PROCLAMATION <br />WHEREAS, The Treasure Coast Indian Association and the Vero <br />Beach/Indian River County Recreation Department will be holding <br />their first annual Native American Powwow dance on February 28, <br />March 1 and 2, 1997 at the County Fairgrounds; and <br />WHEREAS, the Powwow will feature presentations of Native <br />American dance, arts, crafts and music; and <br />WHEREAS, a Powwow is a time that Indian people meet together <br />to join in dancing, singing, visiting, renewing old friendships and <br />making new ones; and <br />WHEREAS, it is a time to renew thoughts of the old ways and to <br />preserve a rich heritage; and <br />WHEREAS, Powwow singers are very -important figures in the <br />Indian culture today, for without them there would be no dance. <br />Original songs were in the native language of the singers, but as <br />various tribes gathered together, they would share their songs, <br />often changing the words to `vocables" so everyone could sing; and <br />WHEREAS, the songs hold special meanings to those who know <br />them, and are reminders to the Indian people of their old ways: <br />NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT PROCLAIMED BY THE BOARD OF COUNTY <br />COMMISSIONERS OF INDIAN RIVER COUNTY, FLORIDA that February 28 <br />through March 2, 1997 be designated as a time for everyone to share <br />in the Native American culture. <br />The Board further urges all residents of Indian River County <br />to attend the Powwow and participate in the traditional activity <br />that focuses on many of the elements of American life that have <br />been lost in our modern society. <br />Adopted this 18 day of February, 1997. <br />BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS <br />INDIAN RIVER COUNTY, FLORIDA <br />Carolyn Eggert,/—Ma—irman <br />Jerry Summers and Richard Conway thanked the Board and invited <br />them to attend the Powwow. <br />APPROVAL OF XMSTU S <br />The Chairman asked if there were any additions or corrections <br />to the Minutes of the Regular Meeting of January 21, 1997. There <br />were none. <br />ON MOTION by Commissioner Adams, SECONDED by <br />Commissioner Tippin, the Board approved the <br />Minutes of the Regular Meeting of January 21, <br />1997, as written. <br />2 <br />February 18, 1997 <br />
