C. 20530 <br />RE: COPS In Schools Retention Plan <br />To Whom 8 May Concern: <br />The Indian River County Board of County Commissioners supports the efforts of the Indian River <br />County SherMfs Office as a community policing agency. As part of the community policing endeavor, <br />the Sheftifs Office has been awarded several COPS grants Including Universe! Hiring, COPS AHEAD, <br />and COPS MORE'98. <br />In reviewing the approving COPS Grant applications. the Board adamwiedes the fiscal <br />responsibilities of retaining these requested positions at the dose of the grant period. For this very <br />reason, we conduct a five year fiscal imps study prior to ping with any grant: application. <br />Therefore, in approving and signing the grant papers, we have anticipated the future financial needs of <br />retaking the positions and will utilize the general fund portion of budget process to accomplish. The <br />authorized strength of the Sheriffs Office is increased accordingly. as such grants are awarded, and <br />Incorporated Into the ShefHfs Office budget We commit to retaining the COPS funded position for <br />one full local budget cycle following the conclusion of federal funding; Increasing tax revenues <br />generated by growth will be utilized to accomplish this. <br />Although growth brings with it many chafiernges, we also recognize the responsibility get has <br />to provide vital services to Its community, and welcome the opportunity to tske advantage of federal <br />funds to augment local dollars and provide an Increased level of service to our community. <br />Please be assured of our continued cooperation. <br />Sincerely, <br />Fran B.
