<br /> Commissioner Caroline Ginn , County Health Administrator Jean Kline , and City
<br /> Councilman Craig Fletcher traveled to Arcadia to tour GPW,
<br /> * Staff welcomed us , and were very professional in their approach . From the
<br /> outset it was apparent that their main concern is for the welfare of their patients .
<br /> * Number of beds : 380
<br /> * Number of beds currently filled : 308 (Extremely disabled patients )
<br /> * Safety incidents at the hospital have been reduced . (Evidently this has
<br /> been a problem in the past .
<br /> * GPW serves two ( 2 ) populations : 1 ) 13ack up to local services , and 2 ) long
<br /> term care .
<br /> * Approximately one third of patients return to families .
<br /> * The buildings are old barracks dating from the 1940 ' s. Because of their age
<br /> and distance from one another , all efficiency is lost . The State has " tortured "
<br /> buildings into providing a mental hospital . There is no electronic surveillance
<br /> equipment for monitoring and/or ingress/egress .
<br /> * GPW staff has done their absolute best with what they have . While old and
<br /> in need of sprucing - up , the interior of the buildings are clean , pleasant and without
<br /> odors .
<br /> * Grounds are in need
<br /> � of maintenance and landscaping . There is a staff of 50
<br /> persons responsible for maintenance . Seems excessive .
