<br /> 1 . The closure of the G . Pierce Wood Memorial Hospital should not be opposed .

<br /> 2 . Because of the fragile infrastructure local ) for mental
<br /> g y patients , it is our
<br /> ` opinion that closing should be delayed until local governments can accommodate
<br /> those patients who will be served in our county/district .
<br /> * We currently have no group home in our community .
<br /> ` *There is no guarantee of apartment accommodations .
<br /> *The County's SRT would not be in place or staffed .
<br /> *Training is essential .

<br /> *Local "drop - in" centers need to be expanded .
<br /> *What of the elderly mentally ill ? Nursing homes will not take them .
<br /> * We have been promised 5 additional beds in our local crisis
<br /> stabilization unit in Ft . Pierce . Funding? When operational?
<br /> *Indian River County will be receiving money for a 15 bed SRT unit .
<br /> This will need to be in place with trained staff prior to closing GPW .
<br /> * We need a clear understanding of who will be responsible for the
<br /> patients' medical costs . Many , if not most , mentally ill patents have
<br /> chronic health problems requiring a great deal of medical attention .
<br /> For example , heart disease , diabetes , osteoarthritis , obesity . What
<br /> I
<br /> impact will this have on our local health care providers/Health
<br /> Department?
<br /> * A health professional will be needed with knowledge of the
<br /> interaction between psychiatric medications and medications for other
<br /> illnesses .
<br /> *Dollars have been promised for a second FACT team , but IRC has
<br /> had difficulty organizing one FACT team .
