II
5 . GROWTH TRENDS
A . BREVARD COUNTY
Planning and Zoning Director Robin Sobrino advised of the growth and
development occurring particularly in their south county . She noted that many people are
concerned about loss of rural areas . Her department is experiencing difficulty in recruiting
planners because planners are joining the private sector . Palm Bay citizens are concern that
expansion will jeopardize their urban flavor . She also addressed development concerns on the
barrier island noting that in the 1990s densities were reduced along the AIA corridor . A roll
back in density is being considered to aid in hurricane evacuation . She responded to questions
and spoke about the zoning classifications in Brevard County .
(Clerk ' s Note : Commissioner Jackie Colon arrived at 1 : 30 p . m . during this
presentation . )
It was pointed out that Brevard County is due in August 2006 for their
Comprehensive Plan update submission . It would take about $ 60
million to do it and developers would aid in its funding . Community input is still being sought
as to the location of a proposed interchange ; it is being considered with sensitivity for increased
development wherever it is built . She advised of joint planning agreements with the following
municipalities : Melbourne , Titusville , Palm Shores , and Rockledge ; they are presently
negotiating with Palm Bay .
B. INDIANRIVER COUNTY
Community Development Director Bob Keating pointed out that Indian River
County is a lot smaller than Brevard .
