PROCLAMATIONS AND PRESENTATIONS <br />5.A. Beach Restoration Presentation by Coastal Resources Manager <br />Jonathan C. Gorham, PhD <br />Coastal Resources Manager Jonathan C. Gorham PhD gave a presentation that he and <br />Michael R. Barnett, P E had given to the Florida Shore and Beach Preservation Association. <br />He talked about the challenges faced in Indian River County's first large scale beach <br />restoration at Sectors 1 & 2 and noted three other restoration projects have been identified <br />in our Beach Preservation Plan (Wabasso, known as Sector 3; downtown Vero Beach, <br />Sector 5; and 7,000 feet in south county or Sector 7). He advised that Sectors 1 and 2 <br />(13,281 feet of shoreline) were jointly funded with the Florida Department ofEnvironmental <br />Protection. He described the unique design challenges which included some near shore <br />reefs and a search for sand sources to give the desired result. He pointed out this sector is <br />located within the Archie Carr National Wildlife Refuge. Other challenges to consider were <br />turtle nesting, turtle foraging habitat, and the endangered southeastern beach mouse. A dune <br />was constructed which helped them succeed in all their environmental preservation efforts. <br />He described the sand sources considered; sandfrom the south borrow site, a distance of <br />September 23, 2003 <br />2 <br />
