1 <br /> tb . All excavated material not suitable for backfill shall be placed on <br /> site at an acceptable location, by Owner, or hauled off the job at the <br /> price set forth in the accepted Bid Documents . All material that <br /> ' is brought in from other sources for backfill shall be at the price set <br /> forth in the Contract. <br /> ' c . Excavated material to be used for backfill shall be neatly <br /> deposited at the sides of the trenches where space is available <br /> ' to protect against caving or sloughing into the trench. Where <br /> stockpiling of excavated material is required, the Contractor shall <br /> coordinate the site location with the Engineer and shall maintain <br /> ' his operations to provide for natural drainage and not present an <br /> unsightly appearance . No excavated material shall be placed on <br /> private property without the consent of the property owner. <br /> ' 4) Compaction Methods <br /> a. Mechanical compaction shall be accomplished using pneumatic or <br /> gasoline-powered tampers or flat-plate vibrators, with the <br /> exception that the first two feet of backfilling over the pipe shall <br /> be compacted by hand- operated tamping devices . <br /> b . Flooding or puddling with water to consolidate backfill is not <br /> acceptable, except where sand is encountered below unpaved <br /> areas only, and only with prior approval by the Engineer. The <br /> flooding or puddling operation shall be repeated with each two <br /> ' feet of backfill placed . <br /> 5 ) Density Tests <br /> a. The Contractor shall arrange to have sufficient soil tests made by <br /> an independent testing laboratory selected by the Engineer to <br /> ' demonstrate conformance of his work with the stability <br /> and compaction levels required by these specifications . Compaction <br /> tests shall be taken at intervals listed herein or as deemed necessary <br /> ' by the Engineer. All test results shall be signed and sealed by a <br /> Florida Registered Engineer, and a copy provided to the Owner and <br /> Engineer. <br /> b . Any proposed alternative test methods to those specified herein must <br /> be approved by the Engineer prior to testing . At the request of the <br /> ' Engineer, the Contractor shall provide such documentation of a <br /> proposed alternative test method as the Engineer may require <br /> to evaluate the method for approval . <br /> ' c . In no case shall the Contractorp roceed with construction on <br /> compacted material until the tests prove satisfactory and approval <br /> is given by the Engineer. <br /> ' CADown1oad\techspec-0260Ldoc SC601 -8 <br />
