Nixon, P E.... via entail
Roadway Production Manager
August 29, 2008
Project No. PSL -08-2558 (BG 11A)
Subject; Proposed Geotechnical Services .
Improvements to 53`d Street & Old Dixie Highway
Indian River County, Florida
Dear Mr. Nixon.
INTRODUCTION
D inkelberger Engineering & Testing, Inc. (Dunke.lberger) is pleased to submit this proposal for
the above referenced project. Our work scope into complete ai roadway soil survey and structure
investigation generally following the guidelines outlined in the current FDOT Soils and.
Foundation Handbook (2006).
PROJECT CONSIDERATIONS
The project will involve an. approximately 4,000 lineal feet of improvements to 53'd Street and
1,960 lineal feet of improvements to Old Dixie Righway ui Indian River County, Florida. The
53'`d Street improvements will begin at the east side of the -Lateral "H" Canal (Station 384+04.66)
and extend eastward to Indian River Boulevard (Station 424+00). The section of road extending
from Lateral "H' Canal to Old Dixie Highway will consist of new 4 -lane divided roadway. The
section of existing 24ane roadway extending from Old Dixie Highway to Indian River
Boulevard will be widened from 24ane to to 4.1ane divided roadway.
Of note is an approximately 1,100 -foot stretch of the proposed 53d Street between approximately
Station 387+00 and Station 398+00, An unimproved roadway presently exists along this section
of roadway, with former borrow lakes being located on both sides. We understand that it is
uncertain if this section of unimproved roadway was constructed before or after the excavation of
the lakes. The composition of the unimproved roadway embankment is also unknown. The
unknown quality and composition of the embankment fill, combined with the plans to place 6 to
9' feet of new fill over the existing embankment, poses concern for the construction and long
term performance of new road.
The Old Dixie Highway improvements will begin approximately 1,080 feet south of 53`a Street
(Station 89+47.58) and extend to approximately 880 feet north of'53`d Street. The improvements
to Old Dixie Highway will consist of adding turn lanes to thea existing 2 -lane roadway.
State of Florida Board of Professional Engineers Authorization No. 6B70
Toll -Free: (877) 64M832
