Health Department <br /> LLYJDepartmental Structure and Functions <br /> The Health Department manages one hundred and fifty full time staff in multiple locations <br /> throughout the county including the Gifford Health Center and the Main Health Department <br /> at Indian River County located at 1900 271 Street. In addition , the department employs staff <br /> in the field and at all county schools . The Health Department is a state agency operating <br /> under a core contract under the Board of County Commissioners . The Health Department <br /> has a vision for a healthier tomorrow by working together to improve quality of life for county <br /> residents . <br /> In order to achieve its mission , the Department seeks to apply the values of teamwork , being <br /> prepared to respond , respect for individuals , integrity of the highest standard , dedication to <br /> helping people , and excellence through innovation and efficiency. To help them achieve <br /> these lofty objectives, the Indian River County Health Department provides direct services in <br /> the areas of communicable disease ; school health ; environmental health ; mental health <br /> counseling ; family planning ; and disaster preparedness . In addition to these offerings, the <br /> " department provides the following Clinic and Health Services : <br /> • Dental Services <br /> • HIV-AIDS <br /> • Sexually Transmitted Diseases ( STD ) <br /> • Disease Tracking <br /> • Tubercolis Control <br /> • We Care Physician Referral Network <br /> • WIC (Women , Infants, and Children ) Nutrition <br /> • Adult Health <br /> • Health Education <br /> • Healthy Start <br /> • Pediatrics <br /> • School Health <br /> • Outreach Programs <br /> The Department is a hybrid entity with involvement in both State and County issues . The <br /> Department ' s role with the County consists of two major sectors , including : <br /> • Public Health " Clinical " Role <br /> Restricted data which cannot be shared externally by law. <br /> Clinical data combined with local demographics to make useful <br /> interpretations into Community Health , Community Health Access and <br /> Disparity. <br /> • Environmental Health Role <br /> Involved with disease prevention , protection , and regulation . <br /> Involved with plan review process and county permitting . <br /> Involvement with Indian River County ' s GIS has occurred on a limited basis since the mid <br /> 1990 ' s . However, the Department continues to remain a separate entity. The Health <br /> Department currently uses GIS for data browsing and has copies of ArcMap for use with <br /> floating licenses . The Department Director, Assistant Director, Environmental Manager, <br /> Business manager, IT director, and Assistant IT director currently use ArcMap .
