Homeless Family Center <br /> Assets Build Futures <br /> RECOMMENDED : $0 <br /> Requested : $ 15,000 <br /> Description : This program provides child development classes (PH-610 . 510 ), and parenting skills <br /> development (PH-610 .680 ) for children of homeless families residing in a homeless shelter (BH- <br /> 180 . 850) and family transitional unit(s) striving to build a positive self identity for and with their <br /> children . The child development specialist provides parenting skills training and self-esteem <br /> training to children and their parents who are homeless with a focus on building personal <br /> strengths and assts in children . <br /> • Taxonomy: BH- 180 . 850 Homeless ; Child Abuse Prevention - FN- 150 . 190- 15 <br /> • Focus Areas Addressed : Mental Wellness , Parental Support & Education , Childcare <br /> Access , Health/Dental Care/Nutrition . <br /> • Number of children to be served : 82 Adults and Children in a group setting <br /> Comment: This program is being re-organized due to the retirement of their (part-time) <br /> psychiatrist. The subcommittee agreed not to recommend funding this year; but would <br /> considering the program next grant season , when the program has re-organized . <br /> H . ORE <br /> HOPE Academy <br /> RECOMMENDED : $90,000 <br /> Requested : $95 , 550 .60 <br /> Students who have been suspended from the school system are registered by their parents , and <br /> assigned a H . O . P . E . ( Helping Other People Excel ) class , which is located at the Gifford Youth <br /> Activity Center. Teachers assist the student in completing assignments necessary to complete <br /> the public school curriculum . Children are also taught coping skills, behavior modification and <br /> participate in "rap sessions". There is a follow-up program for students who have completed the <br /> program . This program collaborates with the School District. <br /> • Taxonomy: PH-600 Parents Education <br /> • Focus Areas Addressed : Mental Wellness , Parental Support & Education , Childcare <br /> Access <br /> • Number of children to be served : 485 ; adults 24 <br /> New Horizons of the Treasure Coast <br /> Substance Abuse/Student Assistance Program (SAP ) <br /> RECOMMENDED : $0 <br /> Requested : $97 , 999 .00 <br /> Description : A comprehensive school-based substance abuse prevention program among high- <br /> risk adolescents . The Prevention Specialists provide a science-based curriculum along with <br /> Level I services ( Level I is general group instruction about the impact of alcohol , etc. ) . <br /> Information Dissemination and Education and Level II services (Level II supportive counseling <br /> upon referral ), which are associated with negative behavior and greater potential for drug <br /> use/abuse . New Horizons has been providing these services since 1993 . Presently these <br /> services are available and provided in schools in Indian River, Martin , St. Lucie and Okeechobee <br /> counties . <br /> • Taxonomy: <br /> • Focus Areas Addressed : Mental Wellness , <br /> • Number of children to be served : 300 <br /> Comment: The Subcommittee agreed that funding this program would constitute a duplication of <br /> services .
