RESOLUTION <br />WHEREAS, Florida's grim traffic death statistics reflect that <br />72% of last year's traffic fatalities occured on two-lane highways, <br />and <br />• WHEREAS, 65% of all highway accidents occur bn two-lane <br />highways, and <br />WHEREAS, current primary road financing capabilities limit <br />construction to a mere 240 priority miles of Pour -lane divided <br />highways during the next four years, and <br />WHEREAS, the interstate highway system is providing safer <br />highway conditions for long distance. travel but is not the answer <br />to short'distanoe intra -city travel, tourist promotion and industrial; <br />development, and <br />WHEREAS, the Legislature in recent session proposed an amend- <br />ment to Article IX of the State Constitution by more than a three - <br />Quarters majority, declaring that an emergency does exist, and <br />WHEREAS, the aforesaid proposed constitutional amendment <br />will authorize issuance of bonds not to exceed Three Hundred Million <br />Dollars for the construction of four -lane primary highways, and <br />WHEREAS, the projects enumerated in the proposed. amendment <br />will provide over 1200 miles of new four -lane highways to be con-, <br />struoted during the next four years,.and <br />WHER.^a.'S, the Ind. Riv. County Commission, cognizant of and • <br />conscientiously aware of the pressing needs for public safety, <br />industrial development and tourist promotion, and being -keenly <br />aware of the constant need for improvement in Florida's highways <br />so as to make them the safest and most traveled in the'United • <br />States. <br />NOW; THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF COUNTY . • t. <br />-a. <br />COMMISSIONERS OF:INDIAN RIVER COUNTY, FLA. in meeting assembled <br />this 4th day of August, A. D. 1965, as follows: • <br />1. To wholeheartedly and enthusiastically endorse the <br />proposed amendment to Article ZX of the Constitution of the State <br />of Florida, <br />2. To urge'the voters of :he State of Florida to express <br />approval of said amendment to Article SX of the Constitution of <br />Florida by voting favorably on the referendum in tiovember,,1965.. <br />AUF 4 <br />
