DEP Permit No. : 0166929-010-EM
Shore-normal transects (bearing North 70° East) shall be established along the project
area. The transects shall be spaced approximately 500 feet apart along the length of the
beach fill placement (Project) area (at previously-established '/2 stations) . Every second
transect line shall be coincident with DEP Reference Monuments (R-4 through R- 17 ,
inclusive) in the Project area. Sediment samples shall be collected according to the
following procedure:
Following the completion of an acceptance section, two (2) test holes a minimum of 18
inches deep shall be excavated along each shore normal transect, within the limits of the
constructed berm . The test holes shall be evenly spaced across the beach profile within
the predicted equilibrium beach berm. From the test hole excavated sediments, the
material shall be mixed in a container (bucket or similar) to a homogeneous consistency.
Two replicate sediment samples (a minimum of 250 grams per sample) shall be collected
at each test hole. One of the sediment samples collected at each test hole shall be sent for
laboratory analysis while the other sample shall be archived. The laboratory analysis
shall consist of a grain size distribution analysis and the determination of the percent
carbonate/quartz present within the samples. The material will be tested in accordance
with American Society for Testing Material (ASTM) standards, and the data will be
provided to the Department in gfNTr' format. The grain size will be tested in accordance
to ASTM Standard D-422 for mechanical analysis of soils methods, and textural
classification will be performed in accordance to the Unified Soils Classification System
as described by ASTM Standard D-2487. The archived samples and laboratory data shall
be submitted to the FDEP upon project completion.
The fine/silt content will be determined by both the Wentworth and ASTM (Standard D-
1140) methods. For the Wentworth method, the material will be washed through a #230
sieve (0 .062 mm) opening, and the material that passes is the silt/fine fraction. The
remaining material is dried and mechanically sieved through a stack of sieves in half phi
sizes over a range from -2 phi to 4 phi including the #230 wive. The fine/silt fraction
based on the ASTM method is determined by the amount of material retained by the #200
and #230 sieves. The sample gradation is based on the result of the dry sieving process.
The carbonate fraction of the sample is determined by a high temperature burnt . A pre-
weighed sample is burned (or ignited) at a temperature of 1080° for a time of 8 hours .
This process changes the chemical composition of the sample, and the carbonate fraction
is determined by weighing the sample and applying the atomic weights of the elements
forming the carbonate crystal lattice.
Pre-construction sampling will be conducted at every even numbered DEP Reference
Monument following the procedures delineated herein for the post construction
monitoring.
Monitoring and Reporting
' Dean, W.E., 1974. Determination of carbonate and organic matter in calcareous sediments and
sedimentary rock by loss on ignition: Comparison with other methods. Jour.
