JUL 18 1979 <br />-2-- <br />Task <br />2= <br />Task 1: Resource Inventory <br />The resource inventory shall include: <br />UGC 1 FAGUE 203. <br />A.- The mapping of the forty-three spoil islands <br />located within Indian River County at a scale of <br />1"=200' or larger. This mapping will be based <br />upon aerial photography supplemented by extensive <br />field checking. <br />B. A study of the changing characteristics of the <br />islands utilizing aerial photography taken during <br />the past thirty years. The purpose of this study <br />will be to determine both the changing size -and <br />shape of the islands and the succession of vege- <br />tation through the period. Special attention will <br />be given to the study of the changing dominance <br />of native versus non-native species. Where feasible, <br />observable changes in adjacent marine grass beds <br />will be noted. <br />C. An inventory of the existing physical characteristics <br />of the spoil islands. This inventory shall include <br />the identification of existing vegetation, soil <br />types, adjacent marine grass beds, and any man- <br />made structures. <br />D. An inventory of the wildlife which inhabits or <br />utilizes these islands. Particular emphasis will <br />be given to identifying avian nesting and breeding <br />areas. <br />Task 2: Resource Analysis <br />The data collected as a part of the resource inventory <br />will be analyzed to determine the optimum utilization of <br />each of the spoil islands and the adjacent water areas. <br />This analysis shall include consideration of -proposals for <br />the islands including: nondevelopment; limited development <br />for passive recreation; development of picnic, hiking, and <br />camping areas; restriction of boating activities in sensi- <br />tive grass beds areas; and replanting of native vegetation. <br />
