t. <br />477 <br />OU <br />Phase IV (Completion Within 48 Months of Acquisition) <br />43: -*i897 ­ <br />It is planned to develop a building on the site for an educational <br />marine museum. The museum would be open for public use and <br />would be primarily educational in character. The primary <br />users of this facility would be: <br />(1) Residents of Indian River County <br />(2) School children in Indian River County <br />(3) Visitors to the area <br />The museum would be likened to a similar facility at the <br />Scripps -Howard Institute, La Jolla, California, as well as, <br />The Environmental Study Center at Jensen Beach, Florida. <br />Examples of some of the displays would be as follows: <br />(1) Archaeological marine samples indigenous to the beach <br />area. <br />(2) Pickled sea animal life found in the nearby ocean. <br />(3) Visual display of the sea turtle cycle. <br />(4) Displays of Indian River shoreline botany. <br />(5) Model mangrove colony: visual displays illustrating the <br />value of sea grapes and sea oats in stabilizing the <br />dunes on the Indian River Coastline. <br />(b) Actual aerial photographs of beach erosion. <br />(7) Visual displays showing a typical beach renourishment <br />program. <br />In addition to the passive mode, the museum would serve as a <br />place for active educational programs for adults in the, form <br />of short cours=es, seminars and lectures by professors from the <br />F.I.T. Oceanography faculty and by visiting scientists on <br />various aspects of marine science and engineering on the <br />coastline. <br />The marine and environmental educational center will develop a <br />series of programs to educate students from the first grade tip <br />to the twelfth in the need to understand our marine envi.ronn,ent <br />and the delicate balance of the coastal zone. The center will <br />have film and video resources, living aquariums, demonstration <br />units, learning kits, and a professional staff of biologists, <br />environmentalists and oceanogr.ipliers. Additional professionals <br />can be brnuL;ht in for guest lecturos from F.I.T. , llarbor <br />Branch Foundotton, the Energy Ccntor at Cape Canaveral, the <br />Science Museum and Planetarium of Palm Beach County, the State <br />Department of Natural Resources, and the Pepartmrnt of Fnviron— <br />nental Regulation.
