The distance from Vero Beach also poses a severe <br />transportation problem. <br />They recommend highly that a local detoxification <br />center be set up here in Indian River County. Some years <br />ago one was set up with Alco -Hope and that facility is <br />presently being used as a half -way house for rehabilitating <br />alcoholics. <br />problem. <br />This would eliminate the transportation <br />It is also felt that there is a great need in Indian <br />River County for a shelter for vagrants and transients <br />passing through town, who are now sleeping under our park <br />benches and in shopping center dumpsters, and the Committee <br />received assurances from representatives of the Salvation <br />Army and Christ is the Answer Mission (C.I.T.A. in <br />Melbourne) that they would be willing to operate such a <br />shelter if an appropriate location, such as a house or <br />store, was made available to them. The Committee strongly <br />urges the County to consider making such a facility <br />available or funds to enable these organizations to open a <br />shelter for homeless men and women, making one room in the <br />facility available for families in the County who are in <br />distress, such as being burned out of their homes, etc. <br />Mrs. Runge then spoke of the difficulty the Committee <br />encountered in obtaining information or participation from <br />many of the various governmental entities and stated the <br />Committee feels that the County needs more representation on <br />the District 9 Mental Health Board in order to receive our <br />fair share of the funds. <br />Various members of the Commission informed Mrs. Runge <br />of the fact that the Commission has been unsuccessful in <br />their efforts to be allowed more representation on the <br />District 9 Mental Health Board, of the difficulty in finding <br />27 <br />APR 2 0.1983 wK 55.3 ?AcE 255 <br />A <br />
