years, the car allowance is forgotten, and you begin to hear <br />"I need a car to drive." He noted that the City has said <br />what is reasonable is $180.00 a month and 120 a mile, and <br />before he came to this county, he received $300 a month car <br />allowance. He further pointed out that for Public Works <br />Director Davis $200 a month doesn't even begin to cover what <br />he uses on the job. <br />Commissioner Bird stated that he also hated to see the <br />Board have to pay the matching benefits, etc., but that may <br />be the cleanest way to do it. <br />Motion was made by Commissioner Bird that the Board <br />accept staff's recommendation that the car allowance <br />payments be treated as additional compensation and proper <br />deductions be made. The Motion died for lack of a second. <br />Commissioner Wodtke asked when such a typical travel <br />statement could be filed, and Finance Director Fry stated <br />that one can be filed any month. <br />Chairman Scurlock felt that the word "typical" has a <br />specific meaning, and Attorney Brandenburg believed it puts <br />the employee in an awkward position, where he might feel he <br />has to justify the allowance by making unnecessary trips, <br />and he, therefore, would prefer to have the deductions out <br />of his salary. <br />Commissioner Wodtke noted that as a Commissioner, he <br />has to justify his travels, and he also questioned the car <br />allowance being used as an incentive to hire someone. <br />Attorney Brandenburg stated that there was no question <br />but that it was an incentive in his case. He had a full <br />time car wheh he worked for Palm Beach County, and when he <br />was hired in Indian River County, one of his questions was <br />whether he would be provided with a vehicle or a car <br />allowance. <br />Commissioner Wodtke again emphasized that it was not <br />his intent to change the $200 a month allowance, but he did <br />JUL 111984 94 <br />BOOK 57 Fmu,E 702 <br />
