PROCLAMATION <br /> HONORING MARCUS JEROME SANDERS <br /> WHEREAS, Marcus Jerome Sanders, a native of Micco, Florida, graduated from Gifford High School in <br /> the Class of 1968; and <br /> and WHEREAS, Marcus joined the United States Army, serving in Vietnam in the Light Weapons Infantry; <br /> WHEREAS, Marcus was honored by the United States Military receiving a Purple Heart on June 12, <br /> 1969 for wounds he received during a heavy artillery battle in Vietnam; and <br /> WHEREAS, Marcus also earned the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Three <br /> (3) Bronze Stars, the Vietnam Campaign Medal, and the Combat Infantryman Badge; and <br /> WHEREAS, Marcus began work in 1979 as an Emergency Medical Technician in Brevard County, <br /> Florida, moving on to become the second African American firefighter and being certified to operate the Jaws- <br /> of-Life, thus saving countless lives; and <br /> WHEREAS, in December 2000, Marcus retired from the Brevard County Fire and Rescue Services, <br /> and was granted 100 percent disability from the United States Army for the wounds he received in Vietnam in <br /> 1969. <br /> NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT PROCLAIMED BY THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS OF <br /> INDIAN RIVER COUNTY, FLORIDA, that this Proclamation recognizes the heroic accomplishments of Marcus <br /> Jerome Sanders in his distinguished military career and public service who will be forever revered as a pioneer <br /> to African Americans for generations to come. <br /> Duly adopted this 161 day of February, 2016. <br /> BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS, <br /> INDIAN RIVER COUNTY, FLORIDA <br /> �a� c-- " S.4- <br /> Bob Solari, Chairman,.,/ <br /> Qjj Y ph E. lescher, Vice hairman <br /> F <br /> 4 G' we S.
