Sheriff then proceeded to present statistics to back up <br />his needs, advising that in 1986 the Sheriff's Department <br />responded to 43,970 calls for service, which are complaints which <br />require a piece of paper to be filled out. In 1987, in the first <br />8 months, they have gone through 35,865 such complaints, or about <br />a 44% increase. This does not include time for routine patrol or <br />routi a officer assistance. If 1988 proceeds at the same rate, <br />they re looking at facing 55,000 such complaints. Sheriff <br />Dobec continued that just considering telephone calls alone, in <br />1986,,they responded to a total of 350,150 emergency calls, and <br />this year anticipate receiving one phone call every 43 seconds. <br />In ad ition, they are going into the new building, and are going <br />to to ke the responsibility for dispatching for 13 different <br />emergency services in an effort to streamline services. <br />I <br />Sheriff Dobeck next addressed at length state mandated <br />training hours and also training hours that enable them to cut <br />back on their liability insurance, and stated that they add up to <br />13,70j4 hours total of required training during the year, or 571 <br />days lin 365. He advised that they are asking for two school <br />resource officers to go in the school system to teach students <br />about the "Just Say Ifo" programs, or a total of 4 officers to <br />contact 10,000 children. They want 2 deputies to work with the <br />CrimelWatch programs and teach crime prevention. The Sheriff <br />emphasized that the Sheriff's Department functions 24 hours a day <br />365 days a year; so, they need five people to fill one position. <br />They also are asking for 4 additional records clerks because of <br />the vyorkioad involved with their new dispatching responsibility, <br />plus a new clerk for the Detective Division, and finally are <br />asking for two additional auto mechanics as they have 150 cars. <br />SEP �198i, <br />21 8001( PAGE 345 <br />a <br />
