(Indian River <br />Shores chose not to be a part of this, and we can no longer <br />provide them secondary backup service without a fee involved. <br />Director Wright explained that Indian River Shores has a <br />single level response set up; i.e., their firemen, police and <br />EMS all perform the same function, and if firemen are out on <br />a call, you don't have paramedics available.) <br />Commissioner Scurlock believed a couple of years ago we <br />negotiated a similar type agreement with Osceola County relating <br />to the cost of equipment and man power used. <br />Director Wright referred to the complex nature of training <br />needed today, stressing that there are 30 different kinds of <br />medications on board the ambulances that can be administered, and <br />you can't afford a mistake any more. He was proud that we have <br />had 16,000 EMS runs and have not had one lawsuit nor even been <br />involved in any litigation. <br />Commissioner Scurlock felt we need to stress this aspect of <br />the service when educating the public, and Director Wright agreed <br />and advised that just over the weekend, three lives have been <br />saved by EMS staff that would have been lost otherwise. <br />Commissioner Bird asked if Winter Beach station eventually <br />will be phased out when Grand Harbor and Orchid have stations, <br />and this was confirmed. <br />Director Wright noted that land for a fire station on Indian <br />River Boulevard will be coming to the County from the Grand <br />Harbor Development Order. <br />Commissioner Scurlock wished to know just how difficult it <br />will be the way we structured this to expand the District to <br />� <br />NOV27 `1 9 800K b, PAUGE 16 <br />
