As additional stormwater management areas <br />and ditches are developed onsite or offsite, these areas will yield a new source of cover <br />material for future operations. <br />Daily Cover <br />At the end of each working day, the Class I refuse will be covered with a minimum of <br />six inches of compacted cover material. The landfill currently uses imported soil <br />supplemented with shredded wood wastes and shredded tires for daily cover. Cover <br />material minimizes rodent and vector problems and helps to mitigate windblown litter <br />and the possibility of fires spreading in the fill. Two passes with the equipment is <br />normally sufficient to compact the soil. Any remaining litter and cleanings from <br />equipment should be placed at the bottom of the completed cell and covered. Drainage <br />of the working face area and the borrow stockpile area should be checked and corrected <br />to minimize erosion, if necessary. Stormwater drainage diversion berms and temporary <br />piping shall be consistently placed to divert stormwater from the active fill area, and <br />filled areas with daily or intermediate cover. <br />Intermediate Cover <br />Intermediate cover is defined as that material which is to be placed on the landfill <br />surface in areas that will not receive final cover or an additional lift within 180 days. <br />Intermediate cover should be placed to a minimum compacted thickness of 12 inches on <br />top of the six inches of compacted daily cover. Any intermediate cover areas that will <br />not be landfilled on or capped with final cover within 180 days should be seeded or <br />covered with wood chips, hay straw or other appropriate cover material to minimize <br />slope erosion.
