She felt the real reason was because of the recent reports that shark <br />bites in that area were being linked to information that some people were chumming for <br />t sharks . She checked with the Sheriff' s office and there have been very few reports of <br />vandalism either before or after the gate ' s installation . Local ichthyologist Grant Gilmore <br />eo advised her there are always sharks in the area regardless of the chumming ; chumming for <br />sharks at night will not increase the daytime numbers . She requested the gate be taken down <br />P . <br />andparking provided so locals and tourists will have access to the beach as it is the only <br />beach in the north end of the county . <br />Public Works Director James Davis stated he did not recall saying anything about an <br />s t ,Act of Congress " . He cited several reasons why the gate was installed .He pointed out <br />there is no lighting , that lighting causes confusion to nesting sea turtles ,and this beach is <br />e <br />y :'in an aggressive erosion zone which has caused escarpments by the steps which are not <br />visible at night without lighting .Parking is also a problem .If the Board wished the gates <br />e <br />removed , he would remove them . <br />ell Commissioner Adams understood there have been reports of partying and feelings <br />of intimidation after dark in the late hours .
