El <br />40 <br />2.04 GRASSING EQUIPMENT <br />A. Seed Spreader: The seed spreader shall be an approved mechanical hand <br />spreader or other approved type of spreader. <br />J <br />B. Equipment for Cutting Mulch into Soil: The mulching equipment shall be <br />f of a type capable of cutting the specified materials uniformly into the soil <br />and to the required depth. Harrows will not be allowed. <br />C. Rollers: A cultipacker, traffic roller, or other suitable equipment will be <br />required for rolling the grassed areas. <br />PART 3 - EXECUTION <br />L.. <br />3.01 GENERAL. CONSTRUCTION METHODS <br />Seeding and mulching operations will not be permitted when wind <br />velocities exceed 15 miles per hour. Seed shall be sown only when the <br />soil is moist and in proper condition to induce growth. No seeding shall <br />be done when the ground is frozen, unduly wet, or otherwise not in a <br />tillable condition. Whenever a suitable length of right-of-way or adjacent <br />area has been graded, it shall be made ready, when directed by the <br />Engineer, and grassed in accordance with these specifications. Grassing <br />shall be incorporated into the project at the earliest praetical time in the lift <br />of the contract. <br />3.02 SODDING <br />A. Preparation of Area to be Sodded: The ground which is to receive sod <br />shall have been graded to proper elevations (2" below sodded grade) to <br />match preconstruction conditions or proposed grades. All disturbed <br />swales and ditches shall have been restored to their preconsttuction <br />condition or better. The preconsttuction grade shall be maintained and the <br />prepared soil shall be loose and reasonably smooth. It shall be reasonably <br />free of large clods, roots, patches of existing grass, and other material <br />which will interfere with the sod -laying operations or subsequent mowing <br />and maintenance operations. <br />B. Laying of Sod: Sod shall be installed in all areas so designated by <br />Engineer. Sod shall be carefully placed so that each piece abuts flush to <br />all surrounding sod, regardless of whether surrounding sod is new or <br />existing. Where new sod is to be placed adjacent to existing sod, the new <br />sod must be cut in to match the <br />02485-3 <br />
