do <br />i <br />I' <br />SECTION 02203 <br />GENERAL & SELECT FILL, FILTER MATERIAL,BACKFILL <br />AND COMPACTION <br />p I. SCOPE <br />i <br />A. The Contractor shall furnish all of the material, equipment, plant, labor, <br />l transportation and supervision necessary so as to complete the Work as <br />shown on the Plans and specified herein. <br />2. GENERAL <br />A. Where structures or unsuitable material have been removed suitable backfill <br />or fill material shall be provided, placed and compacted to elevate the site <br />to the finish grade as shown on the grading plans. Pre -fill compaction shall be <br />accomplished prior to this operation, as specified herein. <br />3. MATERIAL <br />A. General Fill - All liumus, peat, spongy material, roots, stumps, muck, paving <br />rnal:e inlC unil nthnr nh;nPtinrmhlp mgtorinle el oll hp iincni"hin fnr hvrlrfill <br />s <br />Suitabley <br />material for backfill shall consist of sandy -loam, clayey -sand, sand, <br />i gravel, soft shale, or crushed stone. The Engineer shall be the sole judge of <br />what constitutes suitable and unsuitable material for backfill other than those <br />materials listed above. <br />f <br />B. Select Fill - Shall consist of uniform, clean, free draining sand, containing less <br />than 3% fines passing a No. 200 sieve. Laboratory test results of this fill shall <br />F be submitted to the Engineer for his approval. <br />C. Filter Material - Shall consist of a washed sand containing less than I % fines <br />passing a No. 200 sieve and must have a uniformity coefficient of 1.5 or <br />i greater but not more than 4.0. Effective grain size shall be between 0.20 and <br />0.55millimeters diameter. <br />4. BORROW <br />l <br />A. If there is not sufficient excavated material of a suitable quality to complete <br />the work_ the Contractor shall provide and deliver the necessary suitable <br />additional material to the job site. <br />5. UNSUITABLE MATERIALREPLACEMENT <br />i A. Fill material shall be placed and spread evenly in layers not to exceed eight <br />inches before compaction.. All fill material shall be free from vegetable <br />matter, wood, and other deleterious substances, and shall not contain rocks or <br />clods having a diameter of more than three inches. <br />B. If soil cement paving is proposed, local yellow sand or hard pan shall not be <br />used for the subgrade nor in the base. <br />6. PRE -FILL COMPACTION <br />A. Should the pre -fill surface elevation be below that required for the base of <br />02203-1
