v - <br />SECTION 02203 <br />GENERAL& SELECT FILL, FILTER MATERIAL,BACKFILL <br />AND COMPACTION <br />1. SCOPE <br />A. The Contractor shall furnish all of the material, equipment, plan(, labor, <br />transportation and supervision necessary so as to complete the Work as <br />shown on the Plaits and specifier) herein.. <br />2. GENERAL <br />A. Where structures or unsuitable material have been removed suitable backfill <br />or fill material shall be provided, placed and compacted to elevate the site <br />to the finish grade as shown on the grading plans. pre -fill compaction shall be <br />accomplished prior to this operation, as specified herein. <br />3. MATERIAL <br />A. General Fill - All humus, peat, spongy material, roots, stumps, muck, paving <br />materials, and other objectionable materials shall be unsuitable for ba. krill. <br />Suitable material for backfill shall consist of sandy -loam, clayey -sand, sand, <br />gravel, soft shale, or crushed stone. The Engineer shall be the sole judge of <br />what constitutes suitable and unsuitable material for backfill other than those <br />materials listed above. <br />B. Select Fill - Shall consist of uniform, clean, free draining sand, containing less <br />than 3% fines prising a No. 200 sieve. Laboratory test results of this fill shall <br />be submitted to the )Engineer for his approval. <br />C. Filter Material, - Shall consist of a washed sand containing less than I % fines <br />passing* a No. 20U sieve and must have a unilormity coefficient of 1.5 or <br />greater but not more than 4.0. Effective grain size shall be between 0.20 and <br />0.55 millimeters diameter. <br />4. BORROW <br />A. If there is not sufficient excavated material of a suitable quality to complete <br />(lie work, the Contractor shall {provide and deliver the necessary suitable <br />additional material to the job site. <br />5. UNSUITABLE MATE, RIALREPLACEMENT <br />A, Fill material shall be placed and spread evenly in layers not (or exceed eight <br />inches before compaction. All fill material shall lie free from veget^',le <br />matter, wood, and other deleterious substances, and shall not contain rocks or <br />clods having a diameter of wore than three inches. <br />B. If sail cement paving is proposed, local yellow sand or hard pats shall nw be <br />used for the subgrade nor in the base. <br />G. PIt ;-F1 LL COMPACTION <br />A.
