0386 -Technical Specifications <br /> ' 2 . INSTALLATION/APPLICATION/PERFORMANCE <br /> t A. All plants except as otherwise specified, shall be centered in pits and set on <br /> compacted top soil to such a depth that the finished grade level at the plant after <br /> settlement will be the same as that at which the plant was grown. No burlap shall <br /> ' be pulled out from under balls . Remove burlap from top 1 /3 of root ball. Roots <br /> shall be spread in their normal position. Container grown plants shall not be <br /> excessively root bound. All broken or frayed roots shall be cut off cleanly. Soil <br /> shall be placed and compacted thoroughly, avoiding injury and shall be settled by <br /> watering. No filling will be permitted around trunks . <br /> B . Form temporary earth saucers with six (6) inch high berm around all newly <br /> planted trees . Saucer diameter for trees four (4) inch caliper or less shall be <br /> approximately three (3 ) feet . Saucer diameter for trees greater than four (4) inch <br /> ' caliper shall be approximately six (6) feet. All trees shall be watered daily for the <br /> first month. <br /> ' C . New planting shall be so set that the final level of ground around the plants shall <br /> conform to surrounding grades , or as otherwise specified . <br /> ' D . Tree and shrub saucers shall be top -dressed with 3 " shredded cypress bark mulch <br /> (American Wood Products type "B " or equal) . <br /> E . The amount of pri <br /> unng on new plant material shall be limited to the minimum <br /> necessary to remove dead or injured branches to compensate for the loss of roots <br /> as a result of transplanting operations . Pruning shall be done in such a manner as <br /> not to change the natural habit or shape of a plant. All cuts over one-half ( 1 /2) <br /> inch diameter shall be treated with an approved tree paint . <br /> 3 . INSTRUCTIONS <br /> A. MAINTENANCE <br /> ' 1 . The Contractor shall maintain all plant materials in a first class condition from <br /> the beginning of landscape construction until the landscape work is accepted <br /> ' by the Owner, including proper watering. <br /> 2 .
